Jensen explores the border between what is manifest and what is hidden, and the relationship between the real and the imaginary. For more than a decade, the Danish artist has worked exclusively in nocturnal environments. Disappearing into the Past (2010–11), to which the works in the collection belong, investigates the concept of memory and signals a turning point in the artist’s work: not only is the darkness of the night abandoned in favour of daylight, but the decision to use expired Polaroid film – no longer in production since 2008 – makes the photographic material itself a crucial element in the exploration of the theme. The unpredictability of the outcomes upon development of the films retraces the process of the construction of memory: a fragmented, unstable process that constantly recombines real visions and imaginary evocations arising from the subconscious mind.
