Among the most prominent documentary photographers, Bruce Davidson approached photography while still a child. As adolescent he studied photography first at the Rochester Insititute Of Technology and then at Yale. During his military service, stationed in Paris, he met Henri Cartier Bresson, whom the American photographer now considers one of the main points of reference, along with William Eugene Smith, Robert Frank and Diane Arbus. Returned to the United States, he began working as a freelance photographer for several agencies and magazines.
In 1962 he received the Guggenheim Fellowship, which helped him to complete one of his most ambitious project, which concerned documenting the events and the consequences of the Civil Right Movement: the results was Time of Change, whose photographs – including Black Americans, New York (1962) – testify to the climate of determination, the key battles, the causes and the effects of a paradigm-shifting struggle hinging on the assertion of rights by the Afro-american community.
In 1966 Davidson was the first photographer to win the National Endowment fot the Arts. Thanks to that, he devoted the two following years to what was to become his best-known research project: East 100th Street. The series tells the sotry of a block in East Harlem known for its poor living conditions, and of which the photographer frequented the streets and inhabitants for days on end, building a very close relationship.
The use of the large-format camera with tripod and black cloth, chosen on this occasion in favor of the more portable Leica, led to a high degree of involvement on behalf of the subjects, whose poverty appears clearly in the images, yet without it ever clouding their dignity. Taking on the point of view of the insider, Davidson with his photographs show a profound sense of respect for the community put on the edge of urban and social place.
