Carmelo Nicosia was born in1960 in Catania where he lives and works. He graduated in pharmaceutical chemistry with a thesis on the photochemistry of the elements. From 1979 and throughout the 1980s he contributed as a photojournalist to numerous international newspapers and magazines, concentrating above all on social and political issues. In 1982 he founded the Gruppo Fase with which he carried on his artistic experiments based on observation of the new contemporary landscape, daily life and the relationship between the arts and photography. Since 1992 he has been concerned with the fields of sociology and anthropology, based on his ethnographical researches of the 1970s, focusing on the themes of journey and the recuperation of identity. Since 1990 he has taught 124 photographic history and planning at the Catania Art Academy, of which he was appointed director in 2006.
His works have been seen in various exhibitions. Among the most important solo shows, mention should be made of Riflessioni a mare, Galleria Il Diaframma, Milan, 1993; I giochi di Il, Palazzo Marchesi, Palermo, 1994; Ultimo sole, the Italian Institute of Culture, Berlin, 2004; L’ultimo sole, Festival di Fotografia, Savignano sul Rubicone, 2005; Sicilia Aura Celeste, Galleria d’arte moderna Le Ciminiere, Catania, 2006.
Among group shows: Photographie contemporaine, Bibliothéque nationale de France, Paris, 1994; Fotografia italiana contemporanea, Prague Museum of Photography, 1995; Coincidenze e contaminazioni, Galleria Civica, Arona, Le arti della fotografia, Musei Civici, Varese, 1998; La vita delle forme, Galleria Civica di Modena, 2003; and the various editions of Da Guarene all’Etna held in the former Carmine church, Taormina, 2000; the Italian Pavilion, Venice, 2002; Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Palermo, 2004; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Guarene d’Alba, 2002 and 2009.
Among his principal books: Vue sur la Mer (Paris: Editions Alphee, 1994), Sulle Onde del Tempo (Catania: Le Nove Muse Editrice, 1997), L’ultimo sole (Milan: Baldini&Castoldi, 2001), Stelle erranti (Catania: Le Nove Muse Editrice, 2004), Sicilia, aura celeste (Rome: Fasa edizioni, 2005).
