Diane Arbus began taking pictures in partnership with her husband, Allan Arbus: toghether they deal with style and fashion photography, but she also continued to take pictures on her own. In 1962 she stopped using a 35mm camera and bought a Rolleiflex, generally regarded at the time as the exclusive tool of the fashion photographer. The weist level viewfinder allowed her to maintain close visual contact with the people she was photographing. Many of her subject face the camera in implicit awareness of their collaboration in the portrait making process.
In 1963 and in 1966 Dian Arbus received two Guggenheim Fellowships for ther project called American Rites, Manners and Customs, which described her journeys across the United States with photographs of contests, festivals, public and provate gatherings, people in the costumes of their professions or avocations, the hotel lobbies, dressing rooms and living rooms she had defined as a part of the “considerable ceremonies”, “symptoms” and “monuments” of present.
In 1967 the exhibition called New Documents organised by the Museum Of Modern Art showed some Diane Arbus’ photographs: the boldness of her subject matter and photographic approach were recognized as revolutionary. Her portraits of couples, children, carnival performers, nudists, middle-class families, transvestites, people on the streets, zealots, eccentrics, and celebrities stand as an allegory of postwar America, an exploration of the realtionship between appearance and identity, illusion and belief, theater and reality.
