Considered one of the most influential authors of documentary Italian photography, Gabriele Basilico started photographing in early 1970s. After completing a degree in Architecture in 1973, he devoted himself to the documentation of cities and the transformation of urban landscape. His first project was Milano ritratti di fabbriche 1978-80, a research on the industrial suburbs of Milano. In 1984-’85, with the project Bord de mer, he took part to the Mission Photographique de la DATAR, funded by the French government to document the transformation of the contemporary landscape. In 1991 he participated to a new mission in Beirut, devastated by a 15-year civil war.
During his life Gabriele Basilico took part to numerous photographic projects in Italy and abroad, which generated exhibitions and books. Among them: Porti di mare (1990), L’esperienza dei luoghi (1994), Sezioni del paesaggio Italiano (1998), Interrupted City (1999), Cityscapes (1999), Scattered City (2005), Intercity (2007), Silicon Valley (2007), Mosca Verticale (2008).
