Briggs’s entire oeuvre invites us to adopt the wide-eyed perspective of the child, not yet contaminated by social conditioning and norms, who does not know how to differentiate the normal from the absurd. For that reason many of his photographs seem initially to have been digitally altered but, in actual fact, they are produced three-dimensionally and then photographed. And so, for example, The Empathetic vs The Mimic (2011) is the result of a painstaking symmetrical staging of objects he found in his parents’ house, and not a digital mirroring of the image. Comfort Object (2012), on the contrary, is a work made of 5 photographs in which the artist wears his father’s clothes and displays his features, creating a sort of confusion of identity that forces the viewer to question the relationship that links parents and children and their respective roles.
