Lorenzo Casali was born in 1980 in Tradate, near Varese. He lives and works in Saronno and Rotterdam. In 2004 he graduated in sculpture from the Brera Academy in Milan.
During his studies he often went abroad (to Budapest in 2003, to Lisbon in 2004) where he focused his interest on the problems of demolition and of empty town spaces. Slowly he integrated sculpture with other expressive means ranging from photography to video, silkscreen prints and installations. His pressing need for a dialogue with public spaces and his interest in the possible relationships between specific locations, works, and the active involvement of the population led him, in 2005, to realize, together with Massimo Moca, a project titled Contesto: five permanent interventions scattered among the ruins of Navella’s town centre (in the vicinity of L’Aquila), far from the usual art circuit.
In 2008 he was chosen for the Duende Studio and Kaus Australis residencies in Rotterdam.
Among the main exhibitions he has taken part in, mention should be made of the solo shows Albedo, Senzatitolo, Rome, 2006; Pulsar, Temple of Hadrian, Rome, 2007; Persistence: blank, the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam and the Historisch Museum, Rotterdam, 2010. His group shows include Kosmos – XI Biennale of the Europe and Mediterranean Area, Athens, 2003; Abitare?, Careof, Milan, TIP, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, 2004; Videopassages@ careof, Careof, Milan, Premio Razzano, Rocca dei Rettori, Benevento, 2006; Day Return Ticket, Senzatitolo, part of the Festival Internazionale di FotoGrafia, Rome, and
Visioni di Città, Reggio Emilia, during Fotografia Europea II, 2007; Selvatico 6, Palazzo Sforza, Cotignola, province of Ravenna, 2008; the 14th edition of the Premio Europeo di Fotografia Riccardo Pezza, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo, Milan, 2009; Enigma/Anima, TENT, Rotterdam, 2010.
In 2009 he was awarded the Movin’ up grant, as part of the support programme for Italian art – ists’ mobility in the world, promoted by the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers, PARC and GAI.
