Minor White is a key figure in twentieth-century photography. He was also a curator, publisher, critic and teaching theorist. His ceaseless committment to the latter pursuit was to take him from the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco to the Rochester Institute of Technology, and from MIT in Cambridge to Princeton University. He organized a series of workshops (which went on for several decades) and gave accomodation to students hin his loft in Rochester. Throughout his career, Minor White was in constant contact with many of the protagonists of twentieth-century photography: Alfred Stieglitz, whose research into equivalents and sequences was to have a profound influence of his work, and Edward Weston, with whom he was to exchange opinions almost right up Weston’s death in 1958. In 1952, together with Ansel Adams, the Newhalls, Dorothea Lange and Barbara Morgan he founded the now-famous magazine Aperture, which became an outlet by which to publicize the work of a great number of artists and indeed his own research, both photographic and theoretical.
For White, photography was always a medium of expression and personal growth, in that it was capable of interpreting the conflict between the forces of the inner life and the poutside world, thus constituting an attempt at reconceiling them. The degree of abstraction he adopted was a consequence of this mystical, almost therapeutic approach to art: hence photography for him is not documentation but metaphor, the expression of an inner experience of the photographer which may be intepreted by the onlooker through a process of intuition.
