Olivo Barbieri was born in 1954 in Carpi, where he lives and works.

He belongs to the younger generation of photographers who gathered around Luigi Ghirri in the 1980s and participated in many of his projects. Working as a photographer since 1971, he initially focused on the photographic possibilities of the artificial light of cities. Since 1989, he has been travelling extensively eastward, especially to China, witnessing its brisk development.
