Paola De Pietri was born in 1960 in Reggio Emilia, where she lives and works. She graduated from the University of Bologna’s DAMS. She started devoting herself to photography during the 1990s. De Pietri has been involved in numerous publicly-sponsored projects – observation of the territory and a reflection on social dynamics – promoted by the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea of Cinisello Balsamo and by Linea di Confine of Rubiera.
Her works have been seen in important shows both in Italy and Europe. Among her solo shows
mention should be made of Spazio Aperto, GAM, Bologna, in 2001; Centre de la Photographie
de Lectoure, 2004; La Nuova Casa, Centro Internazionale L. Malaguzzi, Reggio Emilia,
2006; Io parto, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo, 2007. The
group shows in which she has taken part include Nuovo paesaggio italiano, Espace Electra,
Paris, 2000; goEurope: the kaleidoscopic eye, Kunsthalle im ARTmax, Braunschweig, 2001; FullContact, Galleria Civica, Siracusa, 2002; Atlante italiano 003, MAXXI, Rome, In Natura, Palazzo Bricherasio, Turin during the X International Bienniale of Photography, 2003; Sguardi contemporanei, the Venice Biennale of Architecture, 2004; Landschaft als Metapher, Ursula Blickle Stiftung, Kraichtal-Unteröwisheim, Trans Emilia, Fotomuseum, Winterthur, La dolce crisi, Villa Manin, Passariano, and the XIV Rome Quadrennial, 2005; Italy Made in Art: Now, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, 2006; Storie immaginate, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo, 2007; ZOOM – inside the human space on the island of San Servolo, Venice, and Archeologia del presente, MARCA, Catanzaro, 2008.
Among the books she has published, mention should be made of Paola De Pietri: dittici (Tavagnacco,
Udine: Art&, 1998); and Paola De Pietri (Quaderni della Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna; Bologna: Pedragon, 2001). In 2009 she won the triennial Albert Renger-Patzsch Award for the publication of her photobook To face.
