During the ’50s Paul Caponigro came into contact with the circle of West Coast photographers. In 1958 he met Minor White, and became first his assistant, and then a guest at his Rochester residence and the protagonist of a solo show curated by White at the George Eastman House.
Venturing ever further into a spiritual dimension, his photography leads him to reflect on the very nature of images, conceived as the link between the outer reality captured on a film and the inner universe of the photographer. Both the close-up series of flowers and plants creating during the New York, his landscape views of woods of Massachusetts and of celtic sites of Ireland – Caponigro’s shots seek out traces of the trascendent nature of the world. Photography for Caponigro always arose from his interaction with the object represented: suspended in a timeless dimension, his images are pervaded by a sense of mystery, the result of a slow and silent practice based on listening to the places and feeling their harmony with his own interior rhythms.
