Artist, experimenter and poet-philosopher, Ralph Eugene Meatyard is considered on of the founding fathers of American “visionary” photography. In 1959 he moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he became a member of the Lexington Camera Club. Here he met Van Deren Coke, and the two became close friends. A keen reader, a friend of writers and poets, Meatyard drew inspiration from literature and philosophy more than the visual arts of the day. His images refused all forms of convention: in the very period in which America was taken with the “straight photography” of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Meatyard was experimenting with blurred images, multiple exposures and portraits carried out with long shutter times. Fascinated by all the most mysterious aspects to be concealed in everyday life, he put together works with a surrealist and meditative tone, in which the members of his family – his wife anf the three children – became the very protagonists of a type of photogrpahy in wich every detail is staged, against backgrounds of landscapes or abandoned places. The skillful use of light, coupled with the highly narrative approach which distinguished his work, give rise to enigmatic and disturbing images, in wich each detail takes on importance, and where the task of deciphering the meaning is entirely up to the onlooker. The artist thus led family photography into an entirely broader and deeper themes, such as the relationship between truth and fiction, the issue of personal identity, the metaphor of the mask, or the presence of death in everyday life.
