Robert Adams
1937, Orange, New Jersey

Approaching the photography in the sixties, Adams dedicated his life’s work to the theme of the urbanized landscape, seeking to change the way the world is seen through the medium of photography. Taking distance from Ansel Adams’ celebration of wilderness, Robert Adams offers an interpretation according to which nature and culture are inextricably bound up in one another. Deforestation, the building boom, the development of industry and nuclear power – these are all phenomena which have profoundly altered the landscape, and which Adams included in his photographs as inescapable everyday faces of reality. His gaze, bereft of sensionalism, is reminiscent of that simple and multidirectional gaze of the pioneering photographers who in the nineteenth century would accompany geological expreditions in order to discover the lands of the West. Apparently detached and without sentimental approach, Adams’ work is rather permeated by the presence of the photgrapher and his continual search of beauty, which Adams sees shining through against all odds, even in the situations of greatest degradation. His poetics is therefore manifested both when his gaze settles upon the marks of human destruction and also when, in his wandering, he comes across corners of the world that have remained unscathed despite the destruction wrought around them. This is the case with the image “Pine Valley, Oregon“, part of a series produced in 2003 in Baker County. Disocovered by chance during a project of deforestation, this landscape struck a chord with Adams by virtue of his lushness: following the large-scale felling of pine trees, the entire zone managed to regenerate itself.
