Formed at the so-called Helsinki School, Kannisto deals with the natural world investigating the way in which it is represented by art and science. Working with teams of researchers at biological field-stations, Kannisto has participated in projects that involve the capture and study of birds like hummingbirds, which have mostly fascinated the artist: “I like the fact that in the Act of Flying series the bird’s stopped motion is so sculptural. – Said the artist –  It’s a fully charged force. I feel that the hummingbird is like a sculptural object and I’m able to rotate it in space by means of photography. The speed of the bird is really challenging to frame”. Kannisto succeeds in giving life to works that are surprisingly balanced between rationality and astonishment, lucid observation and perceptive emotion, putting on the center of her search the interaction between art and science, in the awareness of their respective limits and through the tapping of their potential.
