In his thirty-year career, Sandberg almost always worked with large formats and black-and-white film, promoting an idea of pure, direct photography that is rooted in the American photographic tradition of the early twentieth century. The artist inherited from straight photography an attitude of enhancing the aesthetic qualities of the photographic language and reducing to a minimum any editing on the images. In the Portfolio, which belongs to collection, the artist’s poetics emerge with crystal clarity: his focus on a wide range of subjects reveals that, for Sandberg, photography is a means to experiment with the world in an unhindered, nonhierarchical way. In Sandberg’s works, the coupling of light and dark echoes other pairings: presence and absence, revelation and concealment, sensuality and death. His entire oeuvre is a tribute to life and to photography as a medium through which to live it.
