Capable of ranging from documentary photography, through the diaristic style, all the way to conceptual photography, over recent years Søndergaard has concentrated on the landscape and portrait genres, to which works of Monochrome Portraits series belong. The Danish artist reserves a peculiar approach for the genre: her subjects are often portrayed from behind or in profile, but in any case they never look at the camera. In her Monochrome Portraits, the image of every person, captured in his or her contemplative isolation, is characterised by a specific dark tone that from the photographic surface expands out to the handpainted frame. Even if chosen by the people photographed, the colours disclose nothing about them, simply contributing to the heightening of the sense of concentration and meditation that, after all, is the true subject of the work.
