Walter Chappell has been an important figure of the XX century American photography. Student of architecture and music, he approached photography during the eraly 1940s, when he came into contact with Minor White which soon became the friend and assistant. In 1962, along with other photographers like Paul Caponigro, Carl Chiarenza, William Clift, founded in New York the Association of Heliographers Gallery Archive, which aims to support a new photographic culture that develops as a form of art tout-cour and is not in service or commercial or documentary purposes. In 1963 he moved to California, where he was commissioned a series of portraits of Sharon Tate, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. This work marks a turning point in his research: from that moment on, he will be more and more attracted by the human body and its correspondence with the forms of nature. In the early 1970s he began work with experimental electron photography: high voltage / high frequency electron imagery of living plants. This work was presented in his Metaflora Portfolio in 1980. Along with this work, Chappell continued photography of nature and the human form, teaching workshops on photographic nudes in nature.
As a curious and pioneering spirit, Chappell photographed many subjects. What stimulated his inner vision however, was the compelling nature of human form, landscape, flora, and often a combination of the three. As Chappell pursued his vision, he became increasingly interested in the understanding of the creative stream within, the energy that flows through and connects all things.
Many consider Walter Chappell a maverick pioneer who developed a unique vision in the rural landscape he sought out to photograph and reside. What interested him in life, and was inseparable from his creative work, were the underlying workings of reality and creation, and the quest to effectively express his discoveries of these philosophical underpinnings through the medium of photography.
