Robert Rive. Photographies d’Italie is the first exhibition in Italy devoted exclusively to the career of Robert Rive (Wroclaw 1817 – Naples, about 1895), photographer of French descent who in the second half of the XIXcentury captured through his lens the most renowned and charming Italian sights. Organised by the Fondazione Fotografia, the exhibition will be on view September 15th, 2016 until January 8th, 2017, at the Modena Foro Boario. Admission is free.
All the photographs on view have been selected by Chiara Dall’Olio, associate curator at the Fondazione Fotografia, and are taken from albums released by Rive while he was working in his Naples atelier, between 1850 and 1895.
The exhibition showcases more than 120 original albumen prints taken from the album “Photographies d’Italie par R. Rive, Naples”, comprising views of the most renowned Italian destinations included in the ‘Grand Tour’: the towns of Genoa, Turin, Milan, Pavia, Venice in the North, so as Taormina, Palermo, Catania, Siracusa and Agrigento in Sicily.
A second album, “Souvenirs de Naples” , comprised of 49 photographs and devoted to Naples and the area of Amalfi, Capri and Pompei, is presented both in its original form and in digital version. To complete the overlook on Robert Rive’s work are a few very rare photographs of Rome.
The exhibited albums belong to a private collection and have been recently deposited in the archives of the Fondazione Fotografia in Modena. They have helped expand knowledge on Robert Rive and added further elements to his scarce biography.
