Vroege[:]

1958, Paesi Bassi

Bas Vroege studied economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1976-1979, BA) and photography at Academie St. Joost in Breda (1979-1981). He co-founded Perspektief, centre for photography in Rotterdam in 1980 and acted as the centre’s director from 1985-1992. From 1988-1992 he also directed the Fotografie Biennale Rotterdam.

He currently is director of Paradox, a not for profit production house for multiplatform documentary, which he founded in 1993. Paradox produces photography related projects (exhibitions, books, films, websites) driven by a social agenda.  Among the projects realised are: Go No Go (on migration in Europe, 2003, photography: Ad van Denderen), The Last Days of Shishmaref (on global warming with filmmaker Jan Louter and photographer Dana Lixenberg, 2008), ANGRY (2011) and Poppy – The Trails of Afghan Heroin (with journalist Antoinette de Jong and photographer Robert Knoth in 2012).

As a curator, Bas Vroege has been responsible for a number of cross-media festivals and exhibitions (Avatar, 1998; EXPERIENCE, 2003). He teaches editorial and curatorial practice at the Masters in Film and Photographic Studies (University Leiden). He was a member of the Supervisory Board of World Press Photo from 2006-2013 and acts as an advisor to the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing.

In 2013 he was invited to be the curator of the International Exhibition of the 1st Beijing Photo Biennial. It led to the exhibition Points on the Map dealing with the representation of international conflict in museum space rather than the mass media (Millennium Art Museum, Beijing).
